Manchester Chamber Concerts Society promotes a series of seven chamber music concerts each year at the Royal Northern College of Music in Manchester. The emphasis is on presenting leading international musicians as well as highly talented younger players. Programming is particularly important; we seek out artists who are willing to include the greatest music written for small ensembles from the eighteenth century to the present day.
Concerts include music for string quartet, piano trio, wind ensemble and all the larger wind/string/piano combinations. Ensembles which have performed for the society in recent years include the Alban Berg, Belcea, Emerson, Endellion, Hagen, Tokyo and Michelangelo Quartets, the Nash Ensemble, London Winds and the Kungsbacka Trio.
Founded in 1936 by Philip Godlee, a local textile manufacturer who was also chairman of the Halle Orchestra and a keen amateur viola player, the society aimed to "enable residents [of Manchester and District] to attend the performance of artists of the highest reputation".
To this day, it promotes a series unmatched in the UK outside of London and the major festivals. The concerts have been held in a number of Manchester venues since the society's inception, finding their current home in 1973.
