The Elias Quartet are already familiar to MCCS audiences – they played for us in 2001 as the Johnston Quartet, whilst they were students at the RNCM, and again in 2008 as part of Ensemble 360. They now focus entirely on the quartet repertoire, and have recently been selected as BBC New Generation Artists. Gramophone Magazine rates them as one of the top five young quartets, and recent reviews are glowing:
“The Elias is the best young quartet I’ve come across in years … There were times during the Kings Place concerts when the Elias’s first violin, Sara Bitlloch, with her soaring confidence, dazzling high register, rhythmic energy and, above all, beautiful portamenti , brought Menuhin’s playing to mind.”
Paul Driver. The Sunday Times, 2009
“Many think this young quartet will be the next Amadeus, and these performances support such a view. Their mutual rapport is obvious and their performance of Mozart’s ‘Dissonance’ Quartet reveals a deep affinity with the composer.”
