‘The Tetzlaff Quartet is one of the world’s most fascinating chamber ensembles.’
La Nazione
Since its formation in 1994 the Tetzlaff Quartet has received considerable attention both in its native Germany and internationally. The ensemble’s leader, Christian Tetzlaff, has been described by the New York Times as ‘one of the most brilliant and inquisitive artists of the new generation’. The quartet’s other members also enjoy careers as soloists and chamber musicians and the results of their collaborations are simply stunning.
Haydn’s G minor quartet, from his groundbreaking Opus 20 ‘Sun’ set (which earned him the sobriquet ‘father of the string quartet’), is full of surprises and eccentric asides. Beethoven’s shadow hovers over Mendelssohn’s passionate Second Quartet, while Schoenberg’s early Opus 7 quartet reveals the influences of Wagner and Brahms in its sheer beauty of sound and seemingly limitless melodic range.
