Auryn Quartet

‘The Auryn’s impeccable tonal blend, perfectly judged tempi and sensitively shaped phrasing produced a performance of truly distinguished musicianship.’ Sunday Herald

The remarkable Auryn Quartet has been playing together since 1981 without a single change of personnel. Its rich history of shared musical experience forms the basis for an unrivalled unity of expression and an exceptional sense of ensemble. The Auryn Quartet has recently performed cycles of the complete quartets of both Haydn and Beethoven and, judging by the glowing critical reaction, this is a concert not to be missed.

Janáček’s Second Quartet was inspired by his love for a married woman thirty-eight years his junior. It is a passionate and very Czech work that juxtaposes tenderness and ferocity, fury and love. Haydn’s Quartet Opus 76 No 5 is sometimes known as ‘the one with the famous Largo’ because its slow movement is one of the composer’s most beautiful, quasi-operatic creations. Finally comes the second of Beethoven’s so-called ‘Razumovsky’ Quartets, whose extraordinary Adagio was inspired, according to the composer, ‘by contemplating the starry sky and thinking of the music of the spheres’.
