6.30pm: pre-concert talk: members of the trio in conversation with Lynne Walker
Three of Britain’s finest chamber musicians, all familiar to Manchester audiences, came together in 2005 to form a piano trio: violinist Peter Cropper, ex-leader and founder member of The Lindsays; Moray Welsh, former principal cellist of the London Symphony Orchestra; and Martin Roscoe, one of Britain’s most versatile and popular pianists.
This concert is eagerly anticipated for the musical insights it is likely to provide. The programme features Haydn’s charming Piano Trio in A flat as well as one of Shostakovich’s most heartfelt creations, his elegiac but life-affirming Second Piano Trio, a work dedicated to the memory of a close friend after his sudden death. The ethereal opening of Beethoven’s E flat trio gives way to a work of great lyricism. With its ‘promenade’ second movement, a third movement that hovers between minuet and waltz and a romping finale, the trio is bursting with melodic delights.
