Katherine Broderick soprano, James Baillieu piano

Katherine Broderick (soprano), James Baillieu (piano)

‘Broderick sings with an ardour and generosity of communication that goes way beyond her already formidable technical ability.’ The Times

In 2007, at the age of just 24, Katherine Broderick became the youngest winner of the Kathleen Ferrier Award and ‘one of the most remarkable’, as noted in The Times. For this concert she joins up with pianist James Baillieu for an enticing and varied programme of German, French and English song. It promises to be one of the season’s highlights.

Schumann’s late Maria Stuart Lieder are fascinating settings of texts supposedly written by Mary Queen of Scots herself. Mendelssohn’s Unbekannter Lieder (Unknown Songs) were eventually published during the bicentenary of his birth in 2009. They reveal this underrated songwriter as an unlikely harmonic and formal innovator. In Proses Lyriques Debussy set his own symbolist-inspired text to an orchestral-style accompaniment in a way that poses numerous vocal challenges. In Metamorphoses, Debussy’s compatriot Poulenc provides a colourful setting of poems by Louise de Vilmorin, the third of which is a suitably virtuoso portrait of the legendary violinist, Paganini. Finally comes Walton’s beguiling song cycle on London-themed poems, A Song for the Lord Mayor’s Table, ending in celebration as the bells of London resound in ‘Gay go up and gay go down’.
