6.30pm – pre-concert talk: the musicians in conversation with Pavel Fischer
‘The London Haydn Quartet played an all-Mozart programme that was virtually detonating with musicianship and fresh ideas. Joined by early-clarinet virtuoso Eric Hoeprich, the quartet’s solution was to highlight the personalities of the individual players, resulting in music that was absorbing and genuinely honest.’ The Washington Post
The London Haydn Quartet was born out of a passion for Haydn’s string quartets, and a wish to explore this repertoire playing on gut strings with period bows. They are joined in Mozart’s sublime Quintet by early-clarinet specialist Eric Hoeprich, a player described by one critic as possessing ‘flawless technique and molten-gold tone.’
Vibrancy characterises Haydn’s Quartet in A major Op. 20 No. 6, while the same composer’s Quartet in E major Op. 54 No. 3 has a dazzling first movement, an intricate Largo cantabile and a finale full of delightful surprises. After the interval Eric Hoeprich joins the group for a performance of Mozart’s sublime Clarinet Quintet. It shares the same golden warmth and mellowness that characterizes much of Così fan tutte, which he was working on at the same time. With Hoeprich creating a distinctive, rueful sound on basset clarinet and the London Haydn Quartet displaying its customary brilliance this will surely be an unforgettable performance.
