Brian Elias String Quartet (UK Premiere)
Brahms String Quartet No.3 in B flat major Op.67

‘Passion, precision, warmth, a gold blend: these are the trademarks of this excellent Israeli string quartet.’ The Times

The Jerusalem Quartet is a popular and regular visitor to venues all over the world. The ensemble’s much-anticipated return to MCCS includes the UK premiere of Brian Elias’s String Quartet, a work written specially for them. Beethoven’s gently ground-breaking Opus 18 No.1 is the composer’s first essay in the string quartet form, with a noble second movement inspired by the tomb scene from Shakespeare’s Romeo and Juliet. Brahms said that his Quartet in B flat was like the wife of a friend of his: ‘very dainty, but brilliant’. It is also a humorous, high-energy work with a wonderful sense of freedom and always remained a great favourite of the composer.
