What is HelpMusicians?

Help Musicians is a UK wide charity which provides musicians with a lifetime of support when it’s needed most. For nearly 100 years, it has provided a broad spectrum of help, support and opportunities to empower musicians throughout all stages of their careers.

We support musicians across a full spectrum need including: physical and mental health and wellbeing, funding grants for creative output and support with career and business development.

Pandemic Response

Phase one of our support saw us quickly release £5m of our own reserves to open the Help Musicians Coronavirus Financial Hardship Fund. The Fund offered a one-off payment of £500 to help alleviate some immediate financial pressures; tens of thousands of musicians apply. Unprecedented demand led to a total of £8.35m being distributed (thanks to phenomenal support from industry partners) in just over 4 weeks to 16,700 musicians who required urgent financial assistance prior to the announcement of government support schemes.

We are now supporting 3,600 musicians through Help Musicians Financial Hardship Funding: Phase two.

This initiative is targeted at self-employed musicians who do not qualify for Self-Employment Income Support Scheme and other unemployed musicians who are experiencing significant financial hardship. The offer is multi-layered to catch those who fall through the gaps of government support.

The fund opened with a total of £2.55m, made up of £2m from the charity’s reserves plus generous donations of £500k from music licensing company PPL and £50k from the Lightbody Foundation.
