Wihan Quartet

MOZART - String Quartet No.15 in D minor K.421
JANÁČEK - String Quartet No. 1, "Kreutzer Sonata"
SCHUBERT - Quartet No.14 in D minor, D.810, "Death and the Maiden"

‘one of the best quartets in the world today’ - International Record Review

‘one of the world’s finest chamber ensembles’ - BBC Music Magazine

Described as one of the leading string quartets to emerge from the Czech school of performance, the Wihan Quartet have gained an international reputation for interpretations of music from their homeland, having received acclaim for their recordings of works by Smetana and Dvořák across their 40 years of playing together.

In this opening concert of the MCCS 26/27 season, they turn their attention to Czech composer Leoš Janáček with his String Quartet no. 1, ‘Kreutzer Sonata’, alongside two equally dramatic works.

The concert opens with Mozart’s sweeping string quartet No. 15. This is followed by Janáček’s ‘Kreutzer Sonata’ quartet, inspired by a tale from Russian author Leo Tolstoy. Depicting a story of an adulterous wife and her murderous husband, this is music that paints a picture of passion, jealousy and dark deeds.

The literary theme continues with Schubert’s powerful and lament-filled Quartet No. 14, a piece inspired by his previously composed song ‘Death and the Maiden’, which was itself based on a work of German poetry.

Trio Gaspard

HAYDN - Piano Trio in A-flat major, Hob.XV:14
SMETANA - Piano Trio in G minor, Op.15
HAYDN - Piano Trio in C major, Hob.XV:21
BRAHMS - Piano Trio No.3 in C minor, Op.101

In the first of two concerts in the MCCS 26/27 to feature keyboard works, Trio Gaspard champion some of the greatest works of the piano trio repertoire. The programme includes two works by Haydn, a composer with whom the group have a special affinity as they are currently in the midst of recording all 46 of his piano trios.

Haydn’s Piano Trio in A-flat major is a piece that sparkles with humorous moments, including flourishes meant to reference folk dances and even the sound of a medieval hurdy-gurdy. Smetana’s G Minor Trio takes its own folk references to a darker place, with the ferocious tarentella dance that makes up the third movement driving to a thunderous conclusion to the first half of the performance.

The second half of this concert is a chance for all three instruments on the stage to shine in virtuosic moments, with Haydn’s Piano Trio in C Major and Brahm’s Piano Trio in C Minor showing why the group’s violinist Jonian Ilias Kadesha, cellist Vashti Hunter and pianist Nicholas Rimmer have all become successful solo artists in their own right.

Schumann Quartet & Martin Roscoe

HAYDN - String Quartet, Op.77 No.2, Hob III: 82, "Lobkowitz"
GLASS - String Quartet No.3, "Mishima"
DVOŘÁK - Piano Quintet No.2 in A major Op.81

Manchester Chamber Concerts Society’s Music Director Martin Roscoe joins forces with the Schumann Quartet for Dvorak’s Piano Quintet No.2, widely regarded as one of the greatest masterworks of the quintet form. One of the UK’s best loved pianists in both intimate solo recitals and large scale orchestral performances, Martin Roscoe is both a regular and a firm favourite in both the MCCS season and more widely in the Stoller Hall programme.

The three brothers Mark, Erik and Ken Schumann have been playing together since their earliest childhood. Joined by violist Matthew McDowell, this close-knit group of performers create ‘music-making of the highest order’ (Guardian, ★★★★★).

In the first half of the concert, the Schumann Quartet open with Haydn’s String Quartet, Op. 77, one of the composer’s last quartet works before his death. Haydn is known as the ‘father’ of the string quartet, and this work shows off all of his deep understanding of string quartet melody and form, giving each instrument time to shine.

Meanwhile Philip Glass’s ‘Mishima’ String Quartet is a radically different work, chosen to celebrate the composer’s 90th birthday year. Based on the score composer Philip Glass wrote for Mishima: A Life in Four Chapters, a 1985 biographical film about the controversial life and death of post-war Japanese writer Yukio Mishima, the music is filled with the pulsing, expansive and slowly evolving string textures that Glass is most famous for.

Quatuor Agate

SCHUBERT - String Quartet No.13 "Rosamunde"
KORNGOLD - String Quartet No.2 in E-flat Major, Op.26
BEETHOVEN - String Quartet Op.132

Returning to the MCCS concert series following their concert at Stoller Hall in November 2023 and now in their tenth anniversary season as a quartet, Quatuor Agate perform a series of lyrical and melodic works.

Schubert’s String Quartet No.13 takes its nickname from the composer’s use of tunes from his ‘Rosamunde’ incidental music, which have become some of Schubert’s most recognised and regularly performed orchestral works.

The programme’s second work, however, comes from a composer much more famous for his Hollywood Golden-age scores. Eric Korngold’s String Quartet No.2 shows how his distinctive sound translates to just four instruments, in a work filled with joyful moments and fluttering flourishes.

The final piece of the programme, Beethoven’s String Quartet No.15 in A Minor, was a work ahead of its time. Written towards the end of the composer’s life, this and his other late string quartets were greeted with both excitement and confusion by critics, but are now regarded as some of the greatest string quartet music ever written.

Fibonacci Quartet

HAYDN - String Quartet in C, Op.76 No.3 "Emperor"
MARTINŮ - String Quartet No.3
TCHAIKOVSKY - Quartet No.3 in E flat minor, Op.30

Bringing the MCCS 26/27 season to a triumphant close, we welcome one of Europe’s leading young string quartets. The Fibonacci Quartet formed while at college in London, and are the only ensemble ever to win both the First and Audience Prize at the Premio Paolo Borciani International String Quartet Competition.

Their programme opens with Haydn’s String Quartet in C, often known as the ‘Emperor’ quartet for its melodic references to Haydn’s own famous tune the ‘Emperor's Hymn’, which has inspired countless anthems, hymns and other classical works in the centuries since.

Moving to a very different soundworld, Martinů’s String Quartet No.3 was inspired by the composer’s move to early twentieth century Paris. Here, he encountered the new sounds of jazz, with plucked strings, driving rhythms, and blues-inflected chords.

Finally, Tchaikovsky’s Quartet No. 3 is a work bursting with light and shade, from mournful solemnity to almost frantic passages that pass between all four instruments. This is music that shows off the whole range of sounds that a string quartet can produce, in a fantastic finale to our 2026-27 season.
